139 – A Song – A Banda

In this episode, we are going to learn some multiple-meaning words and the metaphonic plural of some words in Portuguese.

The song I’ll sing today is called “A Banda” by Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, popularly known as Chico Buarque. Besides being a composer, he is also a singer, a dramatist  and a writer.

A Banda
Chico Buarque

Estava à toa na vida
O meu amor me chamou
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

A minha gente sofrida
Despediu-se da dor
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

O homem sério que contava dinheiro parou
O faroleiro que contava vantagem parou
A namorada que contava as estrelas parou

Pra ver a banda passar

More Info:
“A Banda”, a song about a marching band, was Buarque’s big breakthrough. poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade praised it highly: “It is rooted so deeply in our culture, a march that, in times of military dictatorship, brings us a feeling of joy that was so sorely missed.” His well-aimed words touched the masses. His handsome appearance was exhilarating… his clear blue eyes spread the magic, which created a countrywide infatuation. (source: http://www.artistinterviews.eu/?page_id=12&parent_id=22)
